Residents of Sagar Manna Road in Behala discovered the mutilated bodies of several dogs and cats inside a recently opened animal shelter. The grisly discovery was made late on Monday night after a foul stench emanating from the house became unbearable for the locals, leading them to investigate the premises.
The shelter, reportedly started by a few individuals just a month and a half ago, had been operating without any issues. However, locals noticed that a strong, rotten smell had started to spread from the building. As time passed, the smell intensified, raising suspicions among the neighbors. When they inquired with the owners of the shelter, they were reportedly met with a lack of cooperation and were given no clear answers.
Frustrated by the evasive responses and concerned by the overwhelming stench, a group of residents decided to take matters into their own hands. Late on Monday night, they forcefully entered the shelter. The sight that greeted them was one of utter horror and shock. They found multiple dead dogs and cats, with large pools of blood and several dismembered body parts scattered across the floor.
The gruesome discovery led to a wave of outrage and anger among the residents. They immediately began protesting and have since accused the people running the shelter of engaging in illegal activities. The allegations include using the shelter as a front for illicit business, with some suspecting the trafficking of animal body parts. The councilor of Ward 132, Sanchita Mitra, also stated her suspicion that the shelter was being used for the illegal trade of dog and cat meat.
Upon receiving the information, the Parnasree Police Station was alerted. Officers arrived at the scene and, acting on the locals' complaint, have detained several individuals for questioning in connection with the incident. Following the initial discovery, animal lovers and various animal welfare organizations also staged a protest in the area on Tuesday morning, demanding strict action against those responsible for the heinous act.
